Today the Devils celebrated the reunion of the 2007 Premiership Team. Many of those players were on hand to present a special guernsey to the team. It depicted the names of the back to back 2006 and 2007 teams with all players, coaches and support members represented. The celebrations were to move on to Cloudland for the Devils Annual Ball that night.
The ground is in pristine condition and the weather was a perfect autumn day. Everyone was expecting a fast free flowing game based on the reserves game played beforehand. However, the final scores accurately expressed the type of game that unfolded. Both teams played a full press with the tackling pressure maintained for the whole game. The first quarter was played at both ends of the ground with neither team able to get the ascendance.
It is fair to say that the Devils coaching staff were concerned at many aspects of our game and when UQ got the upper hand early in the 2nd quarter, we knew we had a battle on our hands. Apart from that early lead, the rest of the quarter was played in our half. Half time came with just a couple of points separating the teams.
A few half time changes were made to get the drive the Devils required. An early goal was followed by a long period of time in our forward half. It becomes a worry the longer it went on, as so often the opposition can take the ball into their forward half and score. This happened occasionally but great defence by the Devils kept all UQ shots on goal as behinds at best.
The on ball players, ably led by Ryan Yorston’s fierce tackling, maintained the level of pressure to maintain the play in the Devils forward line for most of the final quarter. Whilst the final score reflects a low scoring dour struggle, the Devils are happy with the win and head to the Annual Ball ready to party.
