WELCOME TO 2009!

A new season with a new set of challenges is upon us.

After magnificent premiership victories in 2006 and 2007, the Club was never far away from the leaders in 2008. However on more occasions than preferred, whilst close, we failed to make up the difference.

And as Season 2009 rolls into view, we will look to improve across the performances of all teams and activities this year.

The year begins with the announcement of new coaches for the Senior and Reserve Grade teams. Dion Scott, a veteran of 79 AFL games with the Brisbane and Sydney Football Clubs, has been appointed as the Senior coach for 2009. Dion will be supported by David Hume, taking on the role as Reserves coach. The Senior coaches of last year, Tom Corless (who gave an outstanding effort for over a decade) and Gary Richter will remain involved with the Club to provide support and assistance where necessary.

As always, we are keen to see as many of our past players as possible return to the Club for the new season. We anticipate that the involvement of Dion in 2009 will invigorate the enthusiasm of many of our current players.

The Club is also eager to see new players get involved at Yeronga. Whether you are an ex-AFL star, or a novice to Australian Football (and anywhere in between), we would like to see you become involved with our Club. There is a determination to perform well, and achieve as much success as we can - but we also recognize the importance of the social aspects of local football. If you want be a part of that effort, we will welcome you to Yeronga.

Of course, there will be our Division One Senior and Reserve Grade teams. But we also aim to nominate a Division Three Senior team and an Under Eighteens team again this season. All players interested in being involved are invited to join the Club.

To help support all these teams, we will also require the assistance of a band of volunteers. There is a wide range of jobs and tasks that need to be completed each match day and training session. These can include boundary or goal umpiring, medical and training support, managing teams, operating technology, running water, etc. Every job is important - all support is appreciated. Last year, we recognized the support of Sean Reidy (Clubman of the Year) and Luke Hamers (Volunteer of the Year) for their exceptional support. If you are interested in helping (or know someone who would), and would like to stay involved with football without playing, come along.

The financial support of the Club is always significant. We value the assistance of major supporters Lambert's Sheet Metal and Remax Colonial (The Wilson Group) greatly. We have many businesses and members providing support to the Club - and will always look for more to help cover the costs of fielding local community football teams. If you are interested in being a sponsor or a member of Yeronga, please make contact with us.

Finally, 2010 will represent the Centenary Year of the Yeronga / South Brisbane Football Clubs. We would like to make the year a special moment for the Club, to commemorate and celebrate the achievement of 100 years as the longest surviving Brisbane football club. But we should also make the year a platform for the future strength and well-being of the Club. If you have any ideas or suggestions for functions, events, or fundraisers, whether this year or next, please let us know. We would like to hear your thoughts.

We look forward to a successful and enjoyable 2009 season - and certainly encourage as many people as possible to support your local community football club at Yeronga.
